The Evergreen Sports Complex found at Grants Pass High School in Grants Pass, Oregon is a community resource for many. It is a turf field surrounded by a running track, and it is used by local schools, the Boys & Girls Club, The Special Olympics, the Grants Pass Rotary Club, and individuals who use the field for recreation and exercise.
In recent years the Evergreen Sports Complex’ field lighting had become an issue of real concern. The old and outdated lights which stood in close proximity to the track took considerable time to light up, and the burnt-out lightbulbs were difficult and sometimes impossible to replace. In fact, some of these bulbs would actually burst at times, raining glass shards onto the area below. As you can imagine, this posed a safety hazard, in addition to the lighting issues which impacted the community’s ability to use the field.
Showing support for youth sports and athletics in general was a deep-seated passion of our founder, Ben B. Cheney. It is estimated that over 5,000 youth in the logging communities of Washington, Oregon and California benefited from his various youth sports sponsorships during his lifetime. It’s accurate to say that number has exponentially grown through the work of the foundation that he founded. That is why the Ben B. Cheney Foundation was proud to provide the Grants Pass High School Athletic Booster Club with a grant to help them purchase new lights for the Evergreen Sports Complex. With the new lights, the community can now enjoy a safer, brighter outdoor recreational experience.
