A short history of the Foundation

The Ben B. Cheney Foundation began grant making as a private foundation in 1975. At the end of 2023, after 48 years of making grants, the Foundation has made approximately 6,330 grants to more than 1,520 different organizations, for a total distribution of $116,362,553.

Perhaps Mr. Cheney’s story, and the story of the Ben B. Cheney Foundation, is best told through this 20 minute video. Produced in 2010, you will hear from some of the people closest to his work, and about his influence on Pierce County and the communities where Cheney Lumber Company operated.
